A sparkling perhaps autobiographical metaphor nigglf the Christian Artist, it is perhaps my new very favorite short story ever.

Parish was laid up with lumbago; and visitors kept on coming. It works wonders in some cases. He got through quite a lot in a day, now; he finished small things off neatly. This immediacy shows how very intimate the story is, beyond its strictly autobiographical nature. In reading about “Leaf by Niggle” I discovered the idea of creation and sub-creation. Yet another kick in the butt to keep writing. The doctor did not set out as promptly as Niggle had done.
Tolkien wrote to his son Christopher: Niggle’s yearnings after truth and beauty God’s creations are echoed in his great painting; after death, Niggle is rewarded with the realisation the making-real of his yearning.

The story is indeed profoundly autobiographical and reveals not merely his Christianity but also his Roman Catholicism in his imaginative presentation of the doctrine of Purgatory. I looked through my Wishlist for something moderately short, and I My heart. He could only just get the picture finished, and only so so, at that: Niggle saw the point precisely, in each case.
