Kathryn Kentyre has been said to be the illegitimate daughter of Mary, Queen of Scots. For 16 years, Queen Elizabeth has kept her tucked away in the Midlands. With Mary’s execution imminent, Elizabeth hits on a daft plan: Kathryn, who has endured a wretched life in the home of a sadistic vicar, philosophically toddles off with Robert. En route to Scotland, the reluctant bridegroom establishes a “handfast” marriage, which he can dissolve after one year thus disposing of his politically dangerous spouse provided Kathryn does not bear a child.
Robert’s insistence on sleeping with Kathryn is illogical in light of the terms of the marriage and his wish to separate after a year. As Johansen’s The Tiger Prince plot makes its desultory way through increasing romantic and political entanglements toward an ending that is more incredible than surprising, Kathryn establishes herself at Craighdhu, courageously defending her new home and family from one who would use her as a pawn in a plan to seize power.

From the glittering courts of Elizabethan England to the storm-tossed cliffs of the Scottish Highlands comes a dazzling tale of seduction, danger, and desire by one of America’s bestselling and beloved authors, Iris Johansen.
She was a beautiful pawn in a game of love and death. When Princess Kathryn Kentyre is snatched from a life of captivity by the mysterious Black Robert of Craighdu, she is torn between absolute terror and soaring hope, He had been chosen to protect her from the dangers surrounding her, yet the moment he swept her away she knew this rogue of a Scottish laird would prove a greater threat than any she faced from her enemies.
He was a warrior-chief torn between duty and desire. Sensuous as sin itself and wild as his native Scottish Highlands, Robert MacDarren had no intention of settling down with one woman. Yet the agreement he’d struck to keep the peace required he marry the orphaned beauty and bring her back to his castle at Craigdhu for safekeeping. It was to be a marriage in name only—and only for one year. He never suspected that the meek hostage he had been promised would prove to be this firebrand of a woman who would challenge his mind, around his passion, and lay siege to his heart.

I did not like Kate, at all, I did not feel any true love between the characters, at some point I thought we’d get that feeling, but it did not happen, perhaps it was the subject matter, the royal intrique or perhaps it was the Tudor period, seldom a favorite of mine.
Robert’s character and story never fully developed we never got a full sence of him, we understood his home in the Highlands meant everything to him, but we got barely a taste of why it was his sanctuary or his holy ground as it were. Kate was her mothers daughter, and it took more from her character develpment rather than enhance it. I can’t recomend this book, it just did not have enouh irsi, it did not make feel Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase.
Set in 16th century England and Scotland, this is a magnificent tale of strength born of hardship and love that develops even when denied. He was the Black Robert of Craighdhu, a remote island castle in Scotland, where he was laird. Half Spanish and experienced in their tortures as well as their pleasures, he’d roguue a pirate and had incurred both the praise and anger of Queen Elizabeth, who has now seized him for another assignment: Kathryn “Kate”now 16, has been raised in seclusion by rhe vicar who is going insane and beats her.
She is bent on escape. But Robert McDarren will find her and handfast with her and then sweep her away to his castle in the Highlands where he intends to keep her for only a year. For he knows who she is threatens Craighdhu and he will do anything to protect his lands and his people. You won’t regret reading this one. The action will draw you into johxnsen world of treachery, envy, betrayal and deception that existed at the time of Queen Elizabeth and King James.
This wasn’t a favorite of mine and I don’t really read it anymore When Princess Kathryn Kentyre is snatched from a life of captivity by the mysterious Black Robert of Craighdhu, she is torn between absolute terror and soaring hope.

It captivated me to the very end! The story told in this novel was of love and sacrifice. It helped me to better understand the jonansen of real love! Love for God and love for family! Really enjoyed the book. Was stuck in an airport and read reviews and decided to start reading it. Found it very enjoyable and pretty much read the entire magnificfnt in one day.
This was my first irid of this author. I may try reading another one of her books soon. I don’t know any other author but Iriis Johansen who can write a steamy romance where magnifocent figures in history this time Queen Elisabeth, Mary Stuart play an active part and the story still roggue believable. How does she do it? I liked everything about this book. I definitely recommend these if you like history and romance.
I am an avid historical romance reader, and have probably read hundreds over the years. I must say that this is one of my top 5 favorite novels. I have read and re-read this book multiple times, and will probably read it again in the future. With a few misses, in general, Iris Johansen magnificebt my opinion is a fantastic writer.
I have read almost all her books, and this is my favorite. Fantastic story, amazing heroine and hero, nice side characters, satisfying ending, just a wonderful book that I would highly recommend. One person found this helpful.
A sixteen year old redhead that may or. Queen Elizabeth forced Robert to marry a redheaded termagant named Kate. With her he took on the job of keeping the secret of Kate’s birth from King James. Robert knew Kate was a danger to his beloved Scottish fortress.
She was a time bomb waiting to go off if anyone found out who she was, Queen Mary’s iligitament daughter.
Or at least that is what Elizabeth has intamated. And what her guardian believes and goes to James with his so called proof. James set the hounds after Robert and Kate only to have them turn on him. After all why settle for helping James be King when he could take Kate and gain both Scotland and England with what he found. But he had not counted on Kate and Robert falling in love and fighting back.
